The Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition 2009 will be held in Melbourne 1-5 July. The winning ensemble will then perform for us. The ensemble will then perform for us. The ensemble will therefore be either Australian or from another Asia-Pacific country. We do not know whether the winner will be a String Quartet (2 violins, viola and cello) or a Piano Trio (piano, violin and cello), but we do know that we shall have the privilege of hearing an ensemble early, in what is likely to be a career at the very highest level of chamber music.

Each year since 2000 the Peninsula Music Society, through its Bursary Fund, has presented bursaries to secondary and tertiary music students who meet certain eligibility criteria. The John Tallis Beleura Bursary is the major award in each category. In 2009 the society expects to be able to award bursaries with a total value of $12,000. Winners of these bursaries will perform at this free public concert, and be presented with their awards.

Bursaries are awarded to secondary & tertiary students, who study violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, bassoon or french horn. Applicants will be interviewed and auditioned by adjudication. Home address of applicants must be in the Mornington Peninsula Shire, City of Frankston or postcodes 3197, 3912 or 3977.

Secondary applicants must be studying at a level not below Units 3&4 of VCE Music or IB qualification, or have achieved AMEB grade 6 or above.
Tertiary applicants must be under 25 years, & be studying music full time at tertiary level.July.

The TinAlley String Quartet is rapidly achieving recognition as one of the world’s most exciting young quartets. Get a taste of mussels, one of the towns’ main industries, cooked in many different ways and available at a range of outlets including fresh off the boats along the pier. It will include outdoor entertainment, sailing in the Enterprise, trips to the mussel farms and local produce. The town’s many restaurants have all been invited to participate to provide a range of fine foods, particularly mussels, in a carnival atmosphere. Local wines, olive oils and cheeses will also be available for tasting and purchasing. Mussel cooking demonstrations will take place throughout the day. A charter boat will take visitors out to view the mussel beds while providing tastings on board. The historic sailing ship, ‘Enterprise’ will also be in port to provide short sailing tours. As well as all the food, wine and oils, there will be a number of quality market stalls in the park, busker's to entertain the crowds and activities for children.

One of the largest open water swims held in Australia. The L-shaped course covers 1.2Km. Registration is on the lawn adjacent to the Portsea Pier from 8:30am until 30 minutes prior to race start time. The event attracts up to 2,000 swimmers in age groups from 12-17 right through to 60+ with past winners including some of the greats of Australian swimming. Each competitor receives a souvenir 100% cotton BLAZER t-shirt, swim cap, certificate and products from event sponsors including Splitrock and Bulla.

Categories of entrant: solo, duo and teams of 4. The Bloody Big Swim is an annual event conducted by the Australian Marathon Swimming Association with the aim "to promote interest in open water swimming for fun and fitness." As it is not reserved for the swimming elite, competitors can choose to swim as individuals, duos or in teams of four. Duos and teams swim as a relay, choosing to change in times of their own choosing.
